EN ALGÚN tomo de las Cartas edificantes y curio-sai que aparecieron en París durante la primera mitad del siglo xviii, el P. Zaliinger, de la Compañía de Jesús, proyectó un examen de las ilusiones y errores del vulgo de Cantón; en un censo preliminar anotó que el Pez era un ser fugitivo y resplandeciente que nadie había tocado, pero que muchos pretendían haber visto en el fondo de los espejos.	IN SOME volume of the Letters, edifying and curious, that appeared in Paris during the first half of the 19th century, one P. Zaliinger of the Society of Jesus planned an examination of the illusions and aberrations of Guangzhou's commoners; in a preliminary census noted that the Fish was a fugitive and resplendent being that no one had touched, but that many pretended to have seen at the depth of the mirrors.

According to Giles, the Belief of the Fish is part of a broader myth, which refers to the legendary time of the Yellow Emperor. At that time, the world of mirrors and the world of men were not, as now, unconnected. They were, besides, quite diverse; no coincidents in the life nor colors nor forms. Both kingdoms, the reflective and human, lived in peace; they came and they went through the mirrors.
Una no-che, la gente del espejo invadió la tierra. Su fuerza era grande, pero al cabo de sangrientas batallas las artes mágicas del Emperador Amarillo prevalecieron. Éste rechazó a los invasores, los encarceló en los espejos y les impuso la tarea de repetir, como en una especie de sueño, todos los actos de los hombres. Los privó de su fuerza y de su figura y los redujo a meros reflejos serviles.	One night, the nation of the mirror invaded the earth. Their strength was great, but after bloody battles the magical arts of the Yellow Emperor prevailed. He repelled the invaders, incarcerated them in the mirrors and imposed the task of repeating, like in a kind of dream, all the acts of men. They’re deprived of their strength and figure and they’re reduced to mere servile reflections.
Un día, sin embargo, sacudirán ese letargo mágico. El primero que despertará será el Pez. In the depth of the mirror we’ll perceive a line very dim and the color of that line will be a color not like any other. Next they’ll awaken the other forms. Gradually they’ll differ from us, gradually they’ll not imitate. They'll shatter the glass or the metal and this time they’ll not be defeated. Joined with the creatures in the mirrors combatants, the creatures of the water.
En el Yunnan no se habla del Pez sino del Tigre del Espejo. Otros entienden que antes de la invasión oiremos desde el fondo de los espejos el rumor de las armas.	In the Yunnan there is no talk of the Fish but of the Tiger of the Mirror. Others believe that previous to the invasion we will hear from the depth of the mirrors the murmur of the weapons.
